Kitty Cassidy was then in her late teens and the songs she recorded during that session, some of the oldest in the tradition, have since become classics. Kitty never sang in public again until a chance discovery led Michael Collins and Paula Carroll to her during the making of the Lyric FM radio documentary ‘The Blue Tar Road’ in 2010. Now, Kitty is back singing the old songs and we are honoured to have her in Knockcroghery for her first public performance since then. Chris Miles, MBE: Apart from her now mandatory annual appearances at our festival, Chris is a regular visitor to these parts. However, since her last visit in April, she has been awarded an MBE for services to education and young people. (Not as big a deal as being an ‘Honorary Rossie’ of course). Before her recent retirement, Chris was a Nursery School Head-teacher and an adviser to Fife County Council on nursery education. Since then she has become a familiar voice at sessions from Edinburgh to London and throughout Ireland. Jim Bainbridge: Jim Bainbridge is a singer and melodeon player who entered the traditional music scene as leader of the Marsden Rattlers, one of the first dance bands to come out of the folk revival. However, the Rattlers went their separate ways in the early 70’s and after a short spell with the Trimdon Band from Durham, Jim drifted off the scene, preferring to play informally in the pubs of East Kent. At this stage he was a musician with a few songs, but moving to West Cork changed all that and soon was singing in bars all over West Cork. He began to tour again in 1991 and is now a regular performer at clubs and festivals throughout Britain and Ireland. He has also become a reviewer and writer for Living Tradition magazine. Jim played Sth. Ros. Singers Circle earlier this year. Tommy McCarthy: Tommy McCarthy, who now lives in London, is a singer from an Irish Traveller family in Birr, Co. Offaly. From a considerable dynasty of traditional singers, song-makers and musicians, Tommy grew up surrounded by the singing of his late mother, her father and aunts and uncles. Having spent his life learning the songs of his family, in 2008 Tommy sang publicly for the first time at the folk club at London's Cecil Sharp House. By the following year, he had sung at the most prominent folk festivals and clubs in Ireland and England, appeared on BBC Radio, and has since shared a stage with many well known performers and has won the praises of many respected musicians, This is Tommy’s 3rd appearance at the Sth. Roscommon Singers Festival. Dónal Maguire: While Dónal Maguire has been primarily associated with unaccompanied singing, he has significant other 'strings to his bow'. He is a fine interpreter of contemporary material, as well as an excellent singer of traditional material, and can accompany himself on a range of stringed instruments. Dónal's major project of recent years, ‘Triumph over Adversity’, focused on Michael Davitt, arguably one of the most celebrated statesmen in 19th Century Irish history. Dónal has toured this musically illustrated lecture since the centenary of Davitt's death in 1906. He has previously delivered the lecture in Ballinasloe and Knockcroghery and such was the interest that we just had to bring it back. Elena Nicoletti & Ricardo Bello: This Portuguies Italian duo make their second appearance at the Singers Festival. We got to know them when they lived in Athlone and now that they have returned to Ricardo’s home city of Lisbon they miss the music sessions and their friends in Ireland. Although Italian by birth, Elena spiritually feels closer to the Portuguese folk song tradition. Ricardo accompanies on guitar. Their first CD album is ready for release and will have its Irish launch at the festival. Sean Mone: From Keady, Co Armagh, Sean is a respected singer and composer and is always a popular guest wherever singers gather. Noted primarily as a songmaker and singer of his own songs, he occasionally dips into the traditional archives for suitable material. His songs, mostly humorous with a serious social comment, have been recorded by numerous artists down the years, his most famous being ‘The Transit Van’. Rosie Stewart counts herself among his biggest fans. Sean has performed in Knockcroghery on numerous occasions in the past. Jack Lynch: Master of storytelling, Jack Lynch tells a wide range of stories that draw on Ireland's rich oral tradition combining folk tales, myths, legends, tall tales and original material. Dublin-born with strong Cavan links, Jack is rooted in the seanchai tradition as explored by Eamon Kelly and John Campbell, having shared a stage with both. His great humor and charm combine to deliver his engaging stories in the most entertaining and hilarious manner. His last appearance here in 2009 is still remembered and talked about with great fondness. Noirin Lynch is from Limerick, but is proud of her Clare roots. A very fine singer and composer of ballads, she is a regular visitor to the Knockcroghery Circle. Noirin is also a regular and popular performer at sessions and concerts throughout the mid-west region and beyond. Frank Nugent represents the Offaly contingent in this year’s concert. He is a relatively recent arrival on the singer’s circuit and most certainly a welcome addition. He has a tremendous voice and chooses his material well. Once you hear him sing, you will want to hear more. Paddy Lohan from the Sth. Roscommon Circle is a storyteller that is steadily building a reputation at his craft, while many of his own ‘true’ stories are on a par with the best. He performed recently at the Three Rivers International Storytelling Festival in Athlone and won tremendous praise from the large American contingent. Annie Armstrong, from Co. Waterford, returns to Knockcroghery for the umpteenth time and it’s always great to have her as part of the festival. Annie has recorded and sung on stage with Ron Kavana on numerous occasions down through the years, but is also a consummate performer in her own right. Guest of Honour: Ron Kavana Another favourite with Knockcroghery audiences, singer, songwriter and producer Ron Kavana has rubbed shoulders with all the greats of Folk, Traditional, Blues, Cajun, Rock and World Music from both sides of the Atlantic. His collaborations have brought him together with such influential musicians as Alexis Korner, Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, The Pogues, Donovan, The Chieftains, Elvis Costello, Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Richard Thompson, the late Sandy Denny and many, many more.
